Gustav Dentzel Dies In 1909 (1:00AM - 1:00AM)
Gustav Dentzel (1844-1909), carousel carver and manufacturer.

Gustav Dentzel was a German born carousel maker sent to the US by his father Michael with a carousel around 1860. He was the founder of the Dentzel Carousel Company in Germantown (Philadelphia), Pennsylvania.

Gustav was born about 1844 in Kreuznach, Germany. Son of Michael Dentzel. In the early-mid 1800s, Michael Dentzel traveled with his whole family around southwest Germany during the summer seasons, visiting fairs and carnivals with his carousel ride. During the winter, the family and workers would make wagons, wagon wheels, carousel animals and mechanisms in their Bad Kreuznach workshop.*

Around 1864, at the age of 20, Gustav sailed to America. His father Michael sent him and his brothers across the Atlantic to the United States on a sailing ship with a carousel in the ship's hold.  This was one of the first carousels in the western hemisphere. Upon arriving in the US, Gustav's listed profession was a carver. In 1867, he changed his cabinetmaker sign to read "Steam and Horsepower Carousel Builder."***

The Dentzel Company (first Gustav, then son William) was carving and creating carousels from about 1870 until 1928. From around 1900 and beyond, Dentzel carousels tended to be large park machines with a mixture of horses and other animals (menagerie). The animals were realistic and well carved. Although the company carved over a long period of time, the style of horses remained remarkably consistent with very few style changes after 1900. Although Dentzel carved menagerie carousels virtually from the beginning, it is widely believed that the menagerie animals were created by Salvatore Cernigliaro, Dentzel's head carver from approximately 1903. Gustav Dentzel died in 1909 and was succeeded by his son, William. The The William H. Dentzel Company closed upon the death of William in 1928.**

In the US, Gustav married the first time about 1874 to Alma N.N. They had children, Augusta, William H. I., Margaret, Helen and Charles. In 1880, Alma died and in 1881 Gustav married the second time: Mary N.N. and in 1881 Edward P. was born. In 1900, Gustav was back in Germany with Helen, and in 1904, he was in Germany with Edward*, though his company kept manufacturing carousels in the US.
